New Delhi: India's teenage batting marvel Prithvi Shaw has returned to training after recovering from the ankle injury that cruelly ruled him out of their historic Test series triumph in Australia.

The 19-year-old, often compared to the legendary Sachin Tendulkar, has been batting in the nets at the National Cricket Academy in Bangalore ahead of India's Mushtaq Ali domestic Twenty20 tournament.

The Mumbai batsman scored a sparkling century on his Test debut against the West Indies in October, but he then missed India's first Test series win in Australia after injuring himself in a warm-up match.

"I felt sad as it was a good opportunity for me to play the quality Australian bowling line-up. I was a bit upset," Shaw said, according to the Indian Express.

"But some things aren't in your hands. Now I am looking forward to the Mushtaq Ali tournament to find my touch and gain my confidence back," the diminutive opener added.

Shaw landed awkwardly while attempting a catch during a warm-up game in Sydney, and left the tour to undergo rehabilitation. India won the four-match series 2-1.

Shaw, who has played just two Tests, became the youngest Indian batsman to score a century on debut when he hit 134 in the Rajkot Test at the age of 18 years, 10 months and 25 days.

Only Tendulkar, who went on to compile a record 51 Test centuries, has scored a ton at a younger age among Indian players after making 119 not out in his ninth Test aged 17.

Shaw also made 70 and 33 not out in the second Test against the West Indies and was named man of the series, which the hosts swept 2-0.

In 1986, Viv Richards was past his prime. Or so England thought. In the 5th Test in Antigua, England found out how wrong they were.

West Indies would win by 240 runs, but not before Viv would demonstrate his power with the bat.

Viv Richards made 110 not out in 58 balls

The ball was seen headed to the boundary more often than not. At 34, he was playing like he did back in 1976 against the same opposition.

His hundred came in 56 balls. It would remain a world record for the fastest Test ton till 2014 when Misbah-ul-Haq equalised it. The joint record was broken by Brendon McCullum in 2016.

110 not out in 58 balls with 7 fours and 7 sixes. A mauling England have not forgotten to this day.

hindi shayari

Spring has come early in the Six Nations. The opening two rounds have been relatively open, assisted by a sharp drop in the penalty count as referees look for fewer excuses to blow the whistle. With the emphasis this year on continuity rather than a contest for possession teams, led by England, are becoming less reliant on set-pieces and turnovers as vehicles for tries.

From 2006 until last year the average number of penalties in a Six Nations match was 21.4, ranging from 18 in 2008 to 24 in 2013 when reset scrums were a bane and some teams used the set-piece to try and wangle a penalty to kick the ball downfield and enjoy an attacking lineout, not least Wales when they secured the title against England on the final day.

The average this year is 13.8, a 35% drop. The six matches have produced 33 tries and 19 penalties and, if that is similar to last year, 32-22, when Italy’s matches are excluded 26-14 plays 16-20. Penalties outnumbered tries every year from 2012 with the exception of 2017 when it was 28-28, but again when the Azzurri were factored out, penalties triumphed – by 29-9 in 2015, the year the Six Nations was unrepresented in the last four of the World Cup.

The five matches involving France last year produced 14 tries, two of them penalty tries. Their two this month have yielded 12, including a penalty try. If Les Bleus were all too easily outwitted by England at Twickenham last Sunday, geared up for a long-distance race only to find themselves in a sprint, they had a go against Wales before becoming overcome by the moment.

Sides in possession have a greater licence this year. The percentage retention rates are well into the 90s for scrums, lineouts and breakdowns and there is a clear emphasis on speeding up the game. Crooked feeds and throws are connived out and all manner of clear-outs are tolerated.

When the Japan coaches spent a week this month watching England train, they said their aim was to achieve a ball-in-play time of 50 minutes in the World Cup. It looks attainable and it is hard to dodge the suspicion that part of the drive to increase the flow of matches has the hosts in mind, given their historic weakness in set-pieces.

England have embraced the shift in emphasis. A team that was hard to work out last year because it seemed to lack definition, in part because of an injury list that appeared to get longer, is suddenly in sharp focus. Eddie Jones had always maintained the importance of an English approach, based on the set-pieces, mauling and kicking, but he has spiked it with pace. They are playing as they train.

When England last year ended a run of five successive defeats by winning the final Test against South Africa, George Ford had been replaced by Danny Cipriani at outside-half. When Cipriani’s chip for Jonny May clinched the match, it looked as if he would remain in the squad. Instead, despite Ford starting only the match against Japan since, Cipriani has returned to the wilderness.

Owen Farrell has taken over at 10 and been given the captaincy. He was one of three survivors last Sunday from Jones’s first starting line-up against Scotland in 2016 – George Kruis and Billy Vunipola were the others. Jones has gradually decommissioned his old guard but Farrell’s influence has been heightened by his moving from centre. If he has been blessed with more ball-carriers than England had a year ago when the likes of Manu Tuilagi and Billy Vunipola were absent, he has a decisiveness England were lacking.

Jones said the two victories were down to the players rather than the coaches but that was only in the way plays were executed. They were both coaching triumphs and in hindsight the clue to the approach against France could be seen on the bench which for the last three years has contained finishers rather than replacements.

By bringing in the props Ben Moon and Dan Cole and swapping Jack Nowell and Chris Ashton so that the latter was in the starting line-up, Jones was placing emphasis on the start rather than the finish, expecting to be protecting a lead rather than looking to break clear. The assumption was that England would indulge France in an arm-wrestle for an hour before exploiting their perceived relative lack of fitness but they suckered them into guarding the gainline, committing players to rucks and defending high and narrow.

They were left kicking themselves as England sought space rather than contact. As in Dublin, it was a masterly execution of the game plan that put England on the front foot from the off and delivered a bonus point as well as victory. It means their next match, against Wales in Cardiff, is a title decider, but only for Jones’s team. If England win, five points from their next match at home to Italy may land their third championship in four years with a round to spare.

Wales will come up with a tactic to stop England but they will need more than that if they are to end a run of five successive defeats in the Six Nations to their rivals. So far England have had it pretty much their own way, apart from 10 minutes in Dublin when they were down to 14 men. Wales, who are looking to set a record of 12 consecutive victories, will need to make them think rather than feel. Their head coach, Warren Gatland, will have to come up with something. Home advantage and a few defensive ploys will not be enough. – theguardian

Players fear 'selective use' of stump mic - FICA head

Want to get more information about aaj tak? Read this article now: Players fear 'selective use' of stump mic - FICA head

aaj tak

The head of FICA, the international cricketers' association, says that a protocol for the use of stump microphones must be introduced to avoid the "selective use" of incriminating audio by broadcasters.

Tony Irish's comments come after the West Indies fast bowler, Shannon Gabriel, and the Pakistan captain, Sarfaraz Ahmed, were both handed four-match bans by the ICC after being overheard making derogatory comments in separate on-field incidents.

On Wednesday, Gabriel admitted to making homophobic comments in an altercation with the England captain, Joe Root, during last week's third Test in St Lucia, while Sarfaraz was caught making a racist comment to the South Africa allrounder Andile Phehlukwayo during an ODI in Durban in January.

The incidents are the first to cause controversy since the decision was taken, at the ICC annual conference in July, to broadcast stump microphone audio "at any time, including when the ball is dead". That move came as part of the ICC's drive to fight player misbehaviour, with new offences introduced such as personal abuse and audible obscenity.

The ICC also factored in fan engagement as a big part of live sport, and the fact that cricket needs to embrace that. During the discussions involving the ICC and the various member boards' chief executives, it was agreed that turning up the stump mic turns the focus not just on spirit of the game, but also allows for greater engagement for the fan watching at home. It brings them into the middle with the players.*

While Irish, the executive chairman of FICA, believes that players will be willing to buy into the usage of stump mic audio, he says it is vital that broadcasters are consistent and universal in how they apply the technology.

"The issue to be discussed is how they are used, including when they are turned up and when they are turned down," Irish told ESPNcricinfo. "What I can say is that, when it comes to a matter such as this, players are generally in favour of consistency, which suggests to me that a protocol on how they are used is necessary."

Asked about the potential for a host broadcaster to exploit the feed captured on the stump mic, Irish said that was the players' biggest fear. "When there is inconsistent use of the stump mic, then there is potential for selective use, which I think players naturally fear. That is not to say all broadcasters do that but the potential and opportunity is there."

The prospect of increased stump-microphone usage has already divided opinions among international teams. England's head coach, Trevor Bayliss, is not in favour, arguing that "sometimes in the heat of battle things are said", whereas Moeen Ali, the England allrounder, believes that the volume should be turned up at all times because "it's time for people to behave themselves".

Irish recognised that there was a danger that some players could seek to use the stump mic to their advantage by setting up an opponent, but added that it remained the players' responsibilities to ensure the line was never crossed.

"Players have an obligation to play within the spirit and rules of the game, much of which relates to the way players treat each other on the field," said Irish, "and I think a consistent protocol shouldn't present opportunity for players to disregard that.

"In a cricket match, and particularly a Test match, long periods are spent in the field, there are intense contests between bat and ball and a lot goes on. On-field characters have been a hallmark of cricket over the years and most of what goes on is within the rules and spirit of the game. It should stay that way."

08.30 GMT, February 15: The article was updated with the point on fan engagement.

HIGHLIGHTS

  • Hanuma Vihari scored 114 in the 1st innings and followed it up with a hundred in the 2nd
  • Vihari had scored 183 for Rest of India against Vidarbha in last year's Irani Cup
  • Hanuma Vihari equalled Shikhar Dhawan's feat of scoring twin hundreds in an Irani Cup match

India batsman Hanuma Vihari became the first player to score hundreds in three successive innings in Irani Cup on Friday when he completed a century on Day 4 of the ongoing match between Rest of India and Vidarbha at the Vidarbha Cricket Association Stadium in Nagpur.

Vihari struck one down the ground off Akshay Wakhare's bowling just before lunch on Friday to reach the three-figure mark, his third straight hundred in Irani Cup. Vihari had struck 114 in the first innings where Rest of India made 330.

Vihari had scored 183 for Rest of India during last year's Irani Cup match against Vidarbha, who went on to retain the domestic title earlier this year. The said match ended in a draw as Vidarbha had posted a mammoth total of 800 in the first innings after a daddy hundred (286) from Wasim Jaffer.

Meanwhile, Vihari also became the first batsman since Shikhar Dhawan in 2011 to score centuries in each innings of an Irani Cup match. Dhawan had achieved the feat against the then Ranji Trophy champions, Rajasthan.

Vihari had stitched a 125-run stand with his India teammate, Mayank Agarwal in the first innings. Despite losing partners at regular intervals, the Hyderabad batsman got to the three-figure mark and helped Rest of India post a competitive total. His innings contained 11 boundaries and two sixes as he took 211 balls for his 114.

Irani Cup 2019, Day 4: Rest of India vs Vidarbha live cricket score

In the ongoing second innings, Vihari has been dominant against Vidarbha bowlers, especially their spinners on a spinner-friendly track in VCA. He has stitched a 200-plus stand with captain Ajinkya Rahane and helped Rest of India take a lead of over 150.

Vihari, who made his India debut during a five-Test series in England last year, has grown from strength to strength and has established himself as one of the mainstays of Virat Kohli-led Test team.

After scoring 167 runs against a quality English attack in difficult batting conditions in his maiden Test series, Vihari skipped the Ranji Trophy but played for India A against the England Lions. In three List-A matches played in Thiruvananthapuram last month, Vihari scored 124 runs, including 92 in a match wherein he also picked up a wicket.

Well, yeah, the flamboyant batsman from Zimbabwe was the major headliner in the ICC World Cup 2015. He has been phenomenal for the team, who made unthinkable happen for the team. But, with Zimbabwe failing to qualify for the ICC World Cup 2019, fans would dearly miss him playing the game.

The knock he played against South Africa in the semifinals will always remain one of the entertaining knocks in the ICC World Cup 2015. He scored 328 runs in 9 games but what has been scintillating was his exceptional strike rate.

Kumar Sangakkara bagged the average of 108.20 at a strike rate of 105, which was the most for any batsman in the tournament. Alongside Sangakkara, Tillakaratne Dilshan also played brilliantly for the team.
