THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Irate bees at the Sports Hub here on Tuesday suspended the fourth One-Dayer between India A and England Lions for about 15 minutes at the Greenfield International Stadium in Thiruvananthapuram after a group of spectators stirred the beehive while the match was in progress.

Around five people who were injured in the bee attack were taken to the nearest hospital for medical care.

The injury was not serious and no player, supporting staff and other officials were hurt in the incident.
According to officials, a group of spectators who wandered to the secluded area in the west stand provoked the bees by throwing stones at the beehive when the 28th over was in progress of the England Lions innings.

Perturbed by the act, the bees swarmed around the spectators in the gallery forcing the spectators including women and children to run for cover. Though the bees didn’t enter the field, India ‘A’ coach Rahul Dravid, who was taking a stroll around the field, had to scramble for safety when the bees unleashed their attack in gallery and fence area.

Following this, the players stopped the match for a while and gathered at one point inside the field. The match resumed only after the ground staff and authorities ensured that the bees were cleared out from the gallery. The authorities also shifted the spectators at the west stand of the gallery to east stand in order to ensure their safety.

Speaking to Express Ajay Padmanabhan, Chief Operating Officer, Sports Faculties ltd, said “It was an unfortunate incident. We had ensured that the gallery where the spectators who sit for watching the match was cleaned ahead of the match. But it were some spectators who went upstairs where they were not supposed to go in the normal circumstances and stirred the hive unknowingly or mischievously.”

“Soon after the incident, the authorities have taken steps to ensure that such incidents do not recur,” Ajay added.

India ‘A’ which bowled out the Lion’s for 221 in their innings have already sealed the series 3-0 winning the first three matches of the series.

live cricket score It was supposed to be competitive, but has turned out to be massively one-sided. The India - New Zealand One-Day International series has already been sealed with two games to go, India proving to be the much superior side.

It's now up to the hosts to put up some competition as the teams move to Hamilton for the fourth ODI on Thursday (January 31). The one good news from their perspective is that India will be without Virat Kohli, who has been rested for the last two games and the three T20Is that follow. The bad news though, is that India have had success even in Kohli's absence - they won the Asia Cup without Kohli in the side. India have an able replacement in Rohit Sharma, who will want to make his 200th ODI special.

Kohli summed up India's ODI run perfectly after the third game, saying they were in 'auto pilot' mode. Indeed they are. The top three batsmen - Rohit, Shikhar Dhawan and Kohli himself. Oppositions feel comfortable only if they get past all three of them quickly. Pleasingly for India, the middle order is falling in place this year too. MS Dhoni is getting into some form, Ambati Rayudu, Kedar Jadhav and Dinesh Karthik have all made runs.

The line-up will see some changes in Hamilton. Dhoni should replace Kohli in the XI if he has recovered from the hamstring injury that kept him out of the third game. In such a scenario, Rayudu could be batting at No. 3, like he did during the Asia Cup. India also have the option of giving Shubman Gill a debut; they can afford to experiment as the series is already theirs. The other box to be ticked in the batting is some game-time for Hardik Pandya. Will he be getting a promotion just to have a hit?

The bowling is complete even in Jasprit Bumrah's absence. Mohammed Shami has stepped up and is fast becoming difficult to drop. He has picked up seven wickets from three matches, giving India the early breakthroughs. Not many teams have had success against Kuldeep Yadav and Yuzvendra Chahal, and New Zealand have been no exception. To make matters worse for the hosts, Pandya has stepped straight back into the side after a long break with a fine spell (10-0-45-2) in the third game.

New Zealand have managed scores of only 157, 234 and 243 in the three matches. They haven't batted the full quota of 50 overs yet in the series.

Kane Williamson said they have shown some improvement through the series, but conceded they have to do a lot more against a side like India. The problems have started right at the top - the highest opening stand between Martin Guptill and Colin Munro this series has been 23. Guptill has managed just 33 runs, while Munro has 46 from the series. Only if that changes will New Zealand feel easier.

Williamson himself has got the starts but not been able to kick on. It's quite uncharacteristic for a batsman of his ability, but shows the kind of pressure India's bowlers have applied. The promising news for New Zealand though is the runs from Ross Taylor and Tom Latham in the third match. Taylor made 93 while Latham, 51. Only if the batting comes together will the bowlers have a chance. New Zealand have got in James Neesham and Todd Astle in place of Doug Bracewell and Ish Sodhi.

Overall, India are a well-oiled machine that looks good to go for the World Cup. The remaining matches are all about finetuning preparations and getting game-time. New Zealand have some distance to travel, and have to up their game.

Squads:

New Zealand: Kane Williamson(capt), Trent Boult, James Neesham, Colin de Grandhomme, Lockie Ferguson, Martin Guptill, Matt Henry, Tom Latham, Colin Munro, Henry Nicholls, Mitchell Santner, Todd Astle, Tim Southee, Ross Taylor.

Afghanistan leg-spinner Rashid Khan is all pumped up ahead of their first Test fixture against Australia which is scheduled for next year. The bowler admitted that being the newest Test-playing nation, it is "more than a dream" for Afghanistan to play Test cricket against Australia in Australia.

The 20-year-old said that they have played a lot of T20 cricket here but playing Test matches on "big bouncy wickets" would be an entirely different experience.

"From Afghanistan, playing Test cricket against Australia in Australia it's more than a dream. Afghanistan got the full membership and last we played against India in India and now we're playing against Ireland in India and then Australia here," Cricket.com.au quoted Rashid, as saying.

"Being a player, it means a lot. Against Australia, playing Test matches is a huge achievement and me and the players are really looking forward (to it). We played here (in T20 games) a lot but … Test cricket is very different.

Pretty excited to face the quick bowlers here, big bouncy wickets," he added.

Giving an instance of recently concluded India-Australia Test series, the right-arm bowler said that the wickets here are "very tough" to bat on and that he is hoping to not get a bouncy track like Perth.

"As we have seen against India, I think wickets are very tough here to bat on, especially in the Test cricket. I hope that we don't play in Perth, we play somewhere else on a good wicket to make some runs and a little bit good for the spinner as well," Rashid said.

He added that the key against Australia would be to control their nerves during the pressure situation

"Pretty excited about it so let's see how it goes. We have the talent, we have the skills but to control our nerves in the pressure situation, that will be the key."

Afghanistan were granted full ICC membership June 2017 after which they played their first Test against India, 12 months later in Bengaluru.

Next, Afghanistan will be playing a one-off Test against Ireland from March 15 to 19 at the Rajiv Gandhi International Cricket Stadium, Dehradun. After that, they will take up the Zimbabwe challenge in August, Bangladesh in October, West Indies in November-December and then Ireland again in March 2020.

The team will face Australia in the Test format after the conclusion of 2020 T20I World Cup which will be hosted by Australia from October 18 to November 15.
